What Does the Oval Approval Mark Mean – and Why Is It Important?
You may have spotted a small oval logo carrying the letters UK, a unique number and sometimes EC on food packaging or production information. It might not be the most glamorous-looking badge in the world, but when it comes to food safety, traceability and accountability, it is incredibly important.
This symbol is officially known as an identification mark, although it is often called the oval approval mark or simply the oval stamp.
It shows that food has been produced or handled in an establishment officially approved to process certain products of animal origin. These can include meat, dairy products, fish and eggs.
For a meat producer such as The Weston Biltong Company, the mark provides reassurance that our production premises have been assessed and approved for the work we carry out.

What do the letters and numbers mean?
Our oval mark contains several important pieces of information:
- UK shows that the establishment is located in the United Kingdom.
- AX 072 is the unique approval code connected to the approving authority and our production establishment.
- EC forms part of the identification-mark format issued under the food-hygiene rules in place when the approval was granted.
The unique code means that products made at the premises can be traced back to their place of production. If a food-safety problem were ever identified, the relevant authorities would be able to establish where the product was made and take appropriate action.
In short, it gives our biltong somewhere official to call home!
Why is the oval mark important?
Receiving establishment approval involves more than completing a form and finding somewhere convenient to display the logo. The production premises and food-safety systems must meet specific legal requirements.
These requirements can include:
- Hygienic preparation and handling
- Suitable premises and production equipment
- Food-safety management and HACCP procedures
- Controls to prevent contamination
- Ingredient and product traceability
- Temperature and storage controls
- Accurate labelling
- Effective withdrawal and recall procedures
The establishment is also subject to ongoing official oversight. The mark therefore represents proper systems, accountability and traceability—not simply a clever marketing claim.
Is it the same as a five hygiene rating?
No. They are two separate things.
A Food Hygiene Rating of 5 reflects the hygiene standards found when a food business is inspected. It is an excellent and important achievement, but it is not the same as formal establishment approval.
The oval identification mark shows that the establishment has been approved to carry out particular activities involving products of animal origin. Not every food business needs this approval; the requirement depends on what it produces, how the business operates and where its products are supplied.
However, when establishment approval is legally required, ordinary food-business registration—or even a top hygiene rating—does not replace it.
What does it mean for our customers?
For customers of The Weston Biltong Company, the oval mark offers another layer of confidence. It shows that our biltong is produced in an officially approved and identifiable UK establishment, supported by documented food-safety procedures and full traceability.
Put simply, it says:
“This product can be traced back to an officially approved UK food-production establishment.”
It may only be a small black oval, but it carries a great deal of weight. For us, it represents the standards and care behind every bag of biltong we produce—and gives our customers confidence that there is much more behind our products than great flavour alone.
