This African savanna tree is a beloved food source for elephants and giraffes. Its large umbrella shape and feathery foliage make it a distinctive sight. Its bark is deeply furrowed and its young branches have a reddish brown shine. The tree is also known for its strong, straight, white spines that can reach up to 6 cm in length. Endemic to the semi-desert regions of Southern Africa, this thorn-tree is a vital source of sustenance for animals in the Kalahari. In fact, it is considered the “Tree of Life” by some of the San families. Its wood is highly valued for its low moisture content, which is due to the African sun baking it to between 0 and 1%. This is significantly lower than Kiln dried or domestic firewood, which can have a moisture content of 20-30%.
