The Mrs Balls Story

The story begins in 1852 when the SS Quanza shipwrecked off the coast of East London, South Africa. Captain Adkins and his wife barely escaped with their lives before settling in King Williamstown — bringing with them a chutney recipe that would become a national treasure. Passed down to their daughter Amelia, the recipe was eventually taken to market in 1917 when Amelia and her husband Herbert opened their factory, complete with the iconic octagonal jar and oval label that South Africans know and love to this day.
